NeoGeo Pocket

The NeoGeo Pocket (B&W) was SNK's first venture into the handheld arena. It enjoyed very little success, due in part to having no advantage over the competition (Nintendo's Game Boy and Bandai's Wonderswan) other than the games that were released. It has an awful screen, very blurry with a lot of shadowing due to the distance between the LCD and the reflective layer - making it a purchase only collectors should worry about. Of course if the price is cheap, it makes a handy unit for link cabling :)

NeoGeo Pocket Color 2
There is no official title for this - which is simply a redesign of the NGPC's case. It's smaller, about the size of a NGP, and has better battery life. It's only release was in Japan.

It's not known whether the NGPC2 has the contrast screw like the NGPC, please let me know if it does.

Miscellaneous

Occasionally, NeoGeo Pocket Colors go out with their screen badly set up - either too dark or too light. The NGP didn't have this problem, as it had a contrast dial. Fortunately, so does the NGPC!

Remove the battery cover, but there's no need to remove the batteries. You'll see a small POT (looks like a flat head screw) at the bottom of the pit where the battery cover's clip sits. This is the NGPC's contrast dial! Grab a screwdriver, and use this to turn the screw in either direction. If you can manage it (it's quite easy), flip the NGPC over so you can see what you're doing, and set up the screen to your desired contrast.

Note that while the NeoGeo Pocket Color will play any NeoGeo Pocket (B&W) games, there are some games that the NeoGeo Pocket (B&W) will not play; for example Sonic and Match of the Millenium.

For a visual comparision on the size of an NGP compared to an NGPC (it's only a few millimetres), check out this image (click to enlarge)
